Have you ever wondered what it might be like to own a racehorse?
Last year, I took the plunge and bought my first shares in two racehorses. The inspiration came from a guest who owned a staggering 16 racehorses! She had visited to watch one of her horses, Scampi, race – and he won! As someone who loves horses but can’t commit the time to owning one outright, this was the perfect solution for me. Racehorse ownership, without the heavy time commitment.
I now proudly own shares in three racehorses: La Pulga, Treasure Time, and Golden Maverick. It’s been an amazing experience so far. Living near several racecourses – York, Beverley, Ripon, Thirsk, Pontefract, and Doncaster – means I’m right in the heart of the racing action.
Through Raceshare, I stay updated weekly with all the goings-on in my horses’ lives – from their training and performances to their well-being and even the fun moments at the stables. Plus, as an owner, I get discounted race day tickets for my horses’ races. It’s a great way to stay involved.
Today, I had the fantastic opportunity to go behind the scenes and visit one of my horses, La Pulga. He’s trained by Charlie Johnston at his stable in Middleham, North Yorkshire. It was incredible watching La Pulga train alongside other horses on the gallops, followed by a warm-down in the indoor school with his stablemate, Tenerife Sunshine.
Charlie, along with Ross and Poppy from the Raceshare team, answered all of our questions. They shared insights about La Pulga’s personality – he’s known as a bit of a cheeky chappie at the yard, and they all adore him. The Johnston yard is home to over 200 racehorses, many of which were born there, and seeing it all in action was something special.
To wrap up the day, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at The Stable Room Restaurant. The whole experience had a wonderful family feel, and the Raceshare team were, as always, incredibly accessible and responsive.
